What We Do

The Becky Schenck Early Childhood Education Center

The Becky Schenck Early Childhood Education Center currently serves approximately 20 children ages 3-5 Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Our student to teacher ratio is 10:1 and we utilize trained volunteers to give each child as much individualized attention as possible. The ECEP curriculum emphasizes development in seven focus areas, including language, math/cognition, science, motor skills, creative arts, interaction with others, and computers. For more information about our Childhood Education Center, please contact michelle.edwards@christamorehouse.org.

TEENS

This program provides tutoring, college/career exploration, job readiness training, and community service opportunities for in-school youth ages 14-18. We teach basic life skills like conflict resolution, time management skills, communication skills, and other skills to help them retain and maintain gainful employment and be successful in the classroom. Employment workshops, mentoring classes, and community projects are some of the core components of this program. For more information about our TEENS, please contact ennis.adams@christamorehouse.org.

Y.E.S. (Youth Employment Services)

Y.E.S. helps teens and young adults ages 17-25 who are not in school to gain valuable job skills training. Secondary goals are to help participants chart paths of education, positive decision making, and leadership and community involvement. Through the program, participants have the opportunity to achieve educational certification for lifetime career skills such as Certified Nursing Assistants, Medical Billing, and Real Estate Licensure. Curriculum lessons include completing job applications, skills assessment, self-esteem building, identifying barriers, goal setting, keeping a job, and mock interviews. The program utilizes the computer lab for internet job research and networking with WorkOne and Westside Community Ministries for job referrals. The YES program is funded by the Indianapolis Private Industry Council/Lilly Endowment, Inc., and provides financial assistance to participants to help them overcome barriers to achieving their goals. For example, financial assistance is available for transportation to and from interviews and work, interview clothing, and tuition assistance. Family Services

Christamore House understands that many of our neighborhood families are challenged by the affects of living in poverty and nearly all are at risk of becoming homeless. To meet their needs, we provide case management services, and provide emergency food and clothing, infant supplies, utility assistance, and referral services to families in need. We work with dozens of organizations to provide mental health counseling, domestic violence services, health services, and many others. In addition, we provide thousands of dollars in direct emergency assistance to the families served through the Community Emergency Relief Fund. We also receive Homeless Prevention Rapid Re-Housing Program funds, allowing us to work intensively with clients and landlords, and make short-term housing and utility payments to keep families from becoming homeless. For more information, please contact jon.oren@christamorehouse.org.

Seniors

This program is designed to provide seniors with regular opportunities for social interaction, enriching activities, hot and nutritious meals, health screenings and nutritional information, and field trips to local attractions. The program is based on the belief that senior citizens are happier and healthier when they have access to recreational and social activities. The program is offered weekdays from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., although field trip days end at 3:00 p.m. Because nearly all of the seniors who participate in our program are living on fixed incomes, there is no program fee. Over 100 seniors are in the program and approximately 35 seniors participate daily. For more information, please contact shaffon.franklin@christamorehouse.org.

Co-Located Services:

Asante Children’s Theatre

The Asante Children’s Theatre of Indianapolis, IN (ACT) is a professional theatre organization committed to preserving the tradition of African and African-American performing arts.  Instructors and mentors with ACT use theatre, music, dance and storytelling to develop the life skills of young people. ACT believes that we can help to rescue youth and deter crime by giving them a safe haven, a sense of purpose as well as teaching them life skills. In turn, the youth performers of ACT provide family-friendly entertainment that educates audiences of all backgrounds.

We believe that delinquent behavior is significantly decreased when youth participate in arts programs. We also believe that communication skills are enhanced and the ability to stick with tasks from beginning to end is greatly improved when youth have the opportunity to participate in arts programs. ACT was created as a response to the fact that fewer and fewer school-age youth are being introduced to the arts on a regular basis. In addition, ACT was created so that youth who customarily are not involved in mainstream school-based arts programs would have an alternative.

ACT has three distinct components. These are ACT Prep4Life, ACT Academy, and the Asante Touring Company.

Indy P.A.L. Boxing

Our historical boxing program provides mentorship and a creative outlet for physical exertion. The program has been operating at the Christamore House for decades. Many prolific boxers have come through our doors having boxed in our regulation boxing gym.
